I bought my first inuit carving this evening. "So what?"
you ask, somewhat belligerently. Well, the interesting thing
about this is...
My visit here is coming to a close in a week and a half,
so I asked Paul about where I could purchase a carving. He
suggested that I ask Yvonne, one of the teachers that came
on the trip to Avvajjaq last Thursday. So, Monday, on my way
into the library to do some book repairs, I ran into Yvonne
and asked if she had anything for sale.
Not at the moment, but she inquired as to when I was leaving
and said she could probably do something by then, asking for
any subject requests. I was a little flabbergasted --- I mean
how many times do you get to request such a thing?
Then tonight, just after dinner, a knock at the door, and
it's Douglas, saying, "My mom said you wanted a carving...?"
and pulled one out of a bag! Incredible! So, a day later and
I'm the proud owner of a caribou antler (really cool purple
and white colouring) miniature carving of a man and a woman.
Speedy service right to my door AND I know the artist!
Only in Igloolik... Lynn
