Above is a good example of the multiyear ice that sits frozen
jutting out of the relatively smooth sea ice. Multiyear ice
is just what it says: ice that has not melted along with the
rest of the ice in the summer months, so when winter comes,
these enormous blocks get pushed up above the regular sea
ice that freezes evenly.
This particular mass was about 9 feet tall at its highest
point.
When riding through the multiyear ice I felt as though the
waves had been frozen solid around me. And I didn't really
capture it here, but the shades of blue that you saw in those
frozen blocks were spectacular.
